About 40 kilometers north of Limassol is one of the main centers of winemaking in Cyprus. We are talking about the small village of Vasa, which can be reached along the Limassol-Paphos highway, stopping along the way to Omodos.

Almost half of all the land belonging to Vasa is given over to vineyards. It is here that one of the island's most delicious red wines is produced, as well as zivania. For those who don't know, let's say that zivania is a traditional Cypriot vodka, obtained from grapes grown on the island.

The history of the Vasa village goes back over 1000 years. It is located at an altitude of about 800 meters above sea level. The name of the village is translated from ancient Greek as "wooded valley". The peak of the development of winemaking, according to historians, fell on the Middle Ages and in the years before the First World War. After the end of World War II, the island's rural winemaking was not the best times. The population of the village was rapidly declining. In recent decades, the country's authorities have actively taken up the issue of preserving the traditional heritage of Cyprus, its crafts, trying to solve along the way demographic and migration issues.

The houses of the village are built in the traditional, and many would call it Mediterranean, style. All streets of Vasa are paved with stone. Time seemed to have stopped here. This is a great place for a measured rest and a quiet pastime. Drinking coffee in one of the taverns in peace and quiet, tasting traditional Cypriot cuisine, tasting young wine - if you like this kind of rest, then you should definitely visit this village.

One of the attractions of the village of Vasa is the temple, in the museum of which ancient icons and utensils have been preserved. Also worth a visit to the Zivania Museum. It was opened only 5 years ago, thanks to the support of the European Fund for Agricultural Development and the authorities of Cyprus. Here you can get acquainted with the ancient, now traditional methods of wine production and zivania, visit a tasting. The museum has a cafe with Cypriot sweets prepared in this village, as well as a souvenir shop.

In September, when the harvest is taking place in Cyprus, the local Paluse festival takes place in Vasa. Paluse is boiled juice of grapes, to which flour and starch are added to harden the mass. The result is molasses. Then from molasses they prepare what in Georgia would be called churchkhela, and in Cyprus it is called sudjukos. The Paluse Festival is an opportunity to plunge into the history of ancient national celebrations in which all the villagers take part.
