Larnaca museums. Part 2

Larnaca is a beautiful sunny city located on the Mediterranean coast of Cyprus.

Larnaca is a beautiful sunny city located on the Mediterranean coast of Cyprus. Its history goes back centuries, and modern life is rich and exciting. The history of ancient times and the Middle Ages is closely connected with both the island of Cyprus and Larnaca. Numerous museums of the city carefully preserve the attributes of those centuries for posterity.

In the previous article, we touched upon such museums in Larnaca as: Museum of Archeology, Byzantine Museum and Pierides Museum. Now it's time to talk about what else you can visit in this wonderful city.

Connoisseurs of painting and sculpture will surely appreciate the small but valuable collection of the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery. Here, in a building located on Europe Square, sculptures and paintings by Cypriot artists are collected. Most of the exhibits in the gallery tell about the history and development of the island's culture.

In one of the rural districts of Larnaca - the village of Afienou - there is the house-museum of Father Kallinikos, where interesting excursions are held, during which you can get acquainted with a mosaic workshop, where they will show you how to make traditional Cypriot cheeses. In addition, you will visit the Kallinikio Museum itself, where the main exhibits are old photos of Cyprus, icons, paintings, archaeological finds. A visit to this place is absolutely free.

Of the modern museums in Larnaca, one can single out a small gallery of works by Theo Michael, a tour of which will be arranged by the author of the paintings himself or his wife. The works of the remarkable author are dedicated to the ancient views of the city, its streets and the artist's memories. In this studio you can not only watch, but buy or order paintings.

If you are a little tired, you can go to the small Apotykes Gallery, which is located next to the Church of St. Lazarus. Here not only works by local artists are exhibited, but also art books are kept. In addition, the gallery houses a café where you can order a glass of wine and snacks.

And, of course, when visiting Larnaca, one cannot ignore, perhaps, the main attraction of this city is the medieval fortress. This ancient castle also houses a museum. The castle consists of a main part, which can be visited for free, and a museum itself with a paid entrance. The museum houses historical exhibits, weapons from different times, for example, the cannons of the First World War are adjacent to the cores of medieval wars. Also, we must not forget that a prison for dangerous criminals was located in the Larnaca fortress, therefore part of the exhibition is dedicated to this gloomy period.
