According to archaeological finds, the history of winemaking on the island of Cyprus goes back at least 6,000 years. It is possible that the first wine in the entire Mediterranean was made on this sunny island. And the whole history of medieval Cyprus is inextricably linked with such a famous wine as Commandaria.

The creation of the first company that started the production of wines in Cyprus on an industrial scale dates back to the middle of the 19th century. ETKO became such a company. Subsequently, such large well-known manufacturers as KEO, SODAP and LOEL arose in Cyprus. The wines of these brands can be found both in the stores of the country and on the shelves of other European countries. In addition, the traditions of family winemaking have been preserved in Cyprus.

Wine in Cyprus is made from about 70 grape varieties, which are carefully grown in the foothills of the island. The bulk of the wines are made from the Mavro and Xynisteri varieties, from which, in particular, the famous Commandaria wine is still produced today. Besides him, the most famous and noted experts are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah wines.

Thirteen years ago, Cyprus joined the European Union. This, on the one hand, made it possible to keep pace with modern technologies, including in the production of wines, and, on the other hand, led to increased competition between local winemakers and their wines with Spanish and French producers. For this reason, the country's authorities express their full support for the wine industry, insisting on increasing both the varieties of grapes grown and the release of new brands of wines. Thanks to the support of the authorities, Cypriots are improving the quality of wines and increasing sales. In recent years, there has been a trend towards an increase in the number of small wineries in rural areas near the lands where the raw materials themselves are grown. This improves the competitiveness of Cyprus wines by reducing the cost of transport services. At the moment, there are about 50 manufacturers on the island, many of whom can be proud to participate in international competitions and tastings, confirming the high level of their products.
