The legal system of modern Cyprus began to take shape during the period of British colonial rule, which lasted from the late 19th to the second half of the 20th century. At the same time, ties with the UK and with Western Europe in general remain very strong.

The country's legislative system was primarily influenced by English law, which completely began to replace Ottoman law in 1878, when Cyprus was occupied by Great Britain. In 1960, after Cyprus gained independence, the so-called Court Law was passed, which essentially approved the main provisions of the English legal system. This Law directs the civil and criminal courts of the Republic to adhere to the principles of English law, as not contrary to the laws and Constitution in force in Cyprus. In other cases, the courts are ordered to be guided by common law and fairness.

At the moment, the Supreme Court of the country consists of 13 people, who are appointed by the President of Cyprus. The Supreme Court is the highest court of appeal in the Republic. In particular, he appoints judges to the courts of lower instances, resolves issues related to their professional growth, responsibility, and termination of their powers.

All civil claims and minor misdemeanors are heard in the District Courts. They usually impose penalties in the form of monetary fines of up to £ 500 or imprisonment for up to 3 years. More serious crimes are dealt with in Assize Courts. Appeals are under the jurisdiction of the country's Supreme Court.

In a number of countries there are special courts to consider a number of criminal offenses that are related to specific issues of state security, military issues. There is no such thing in Cyprus. But there are specialized courts for the settlement of a number of non-criminal issues: Family Court, Rent Control Court, Labor Court. Their decisions can only be appealed to the Supreme Court or the Attorney General.
